Welcome to Breakfast in America

I’m a Brit who unexpectedly emigrated to the USA in 2008, and this is my photo journal.

It’s an eclectic mix of things; there’s no guiding theme or topic. It is whatever catches my attention, what I’ve been thinking, doing, or piques my interest. Currently that’s mainly backpacking and clearing some of the backlog on my ‘honey-do’ list.

Memories

A dozen pictures, picked at random from my favorite memories. You can see my portfolio here.

Breakfast in America

Breakfast in America — Our first Breakfast. We got up early to get breakfast before church. It was my first opportunity to sample ‘Biscuits and Gravy’ and take my own special picture of Ginger. Aunt Martha’s Pankake House, Springfield, Missouri.

Large pool on Piney Creek

Large pool on Piney Creek – I didn’t check how deep, but judging by the color, a few feet.

Camo Covered Toyota Tundra pick-up

Camo Covered Toyota Tundra pick-up – My first trip to the US and this camo covered Toyota Tundra pick-up at Bass Pro was an essential photo opportunity.

Across The Tracks

Across The Tracks – New buildings (offices and housing) opposite Sydenham Terrace.

The end of the hike

The end of the hike – Day hike with Katie and Lanie. I took them to my favorite spot in Piney Creek Wilderness. It was an easy 5.5 mile hike with 570ft of elevation, and a nice long lunch stop by the lake.

Through the veil

Through the veil – It’s taken me a while to see the potential in this picture. I like this alternate treatment of the image.

Camped in ‘Twin Falls Hollow’

Camped in ‘Twin Falls Hollow’ – I’ve not camped in this spot for a while. Recently I’ve been bushwhacking further down the hollow where the sides are not quite so steep. But the views here are much nicer, and I like the little rock-shelf tables I can use as mini kitchen tables. 4

Chapel Cross

Chapel Cross – St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Kansas City, Missouri.

Looking south, commercial development ceases abruptly.

I changed position, and this works a lot better at showing the development without the hotel getting quite as much attention, even if it does still dominate the picture more than I’d like.

This wasn’t meant to be a picture of a hotel. I was more interested in how commercial development dominates the environment and how the buildings seem to run forever along the coast.

Hindsight suggests I should have picked a starting point for the image with a less dominating subject. Also, the focus is a tad soft for some reason.

After we visited Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, we headed down the Delaware coast and stopped for our first view of the Atlantic Ocean in many years (March 2014).

We then continued down the coast in search of somewhere to stay.

Ginger found a great deal on a hotel in Ocean City, Maryland. One look at the view of the Atlantic from our room’s balcony and we both said that we must set an alarm for sunrise the next day.
